NFL DraftIn the history of the NFL draft, there are fewer players that have drawn more criticism than Ryan Leaf and Lawrence Phillips. At least that was until Jamarcus Russell. Russell was released by the Oakland back in May after finishing 7-18 as a starter. Earlier in the week, he was arrested at his home in Mobile Alabama and charged with having prescription cough medicine without a prescription. Problems From the Start There were questions regarding Russell’s desire and drive before he even entered the league in 2007. However, the Oakland Raiders took an online Texas Holdem style gamble with Russell and drafted him #1 overall in 2007. A long holdout by the rookie ensued and Russell held out the entire pre-season and did not sign until Week 1, when he signed a six year deal worth up to $68 Million. For the 2007, Russell saw limited action and finished the season completing 36 of 66 pass attempts for 373 yards, two touchdowns, and four picks. Russell was made the starter in 2008 where he led the Raiders to a lackluster 5-11 season. In 2009, he was benched in November due to lackluster play in favor of Bruce Gradkowski. When Gradkowski was injured, coach Tom Cable started Charlie Frye and relegated Russell to third string. This spelled the beginning of the end for Russell. Writing on the Wall - Or Rather the Stomach When Russell reported to mini-camp in March, he was listed at 290 lbs, 29 lbs heavier than his reported weight of 271. By April, Russell was sitting at 300 lbs. Russell was told that he could compete for the starter job in Oakland, but after the team traded for former Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell, the end seemed near. Finally, Russell was released on May 6th and the next day became an unrestricted free agent. Russell’s recent drug charges make it uncertain whether any team will want to take on the problematic quarterback, but it is not an impossibility. Another team may very well take a flyer on him just as the Eagles did with Mike Vick. In the meanwhile, Russell would be better suited to get into playing shape and a playing mentality as opposed to looking at poker rooms comparisons. It is unlikely that he will be signed to be a starter right away, but injuries may force a team to gamble much like Oakland did. The question is whether Russell will put forth the effort to repair his career or will he indeed wrestle the title of “Greatest Draft Bust” from Ryan Leaf.
