Poker variables that you need to consider

Before you play a hand of poker you should work on and improve your game as much as possible. In order to take your game to the next level then you need to consider numerous factors before you make your move. One such factor is your opponents range or estimated range. If you think about this for a moment then before you make a move in poker without a strong hand (which is most of the time) then you need to have some sort of idea what type of hand you are going up against. If you have no idea or you do not want to have much of an idea then you are either going to have to do one of two things in order to make your money.

You are going to have to multi-table and also not play above low levels if you are going to totally treat hand ranges with this much contempt. Another factor that you need to take into account is your level of pot equity. Your opponents hand range is basically nothing more than a set of holdings that your opponent could have based on factors like their position and bet sizing and biases that they have shown towards certain lines of play.

But pot equity is linked to fold equity and it should always be in your thoughts when you play poker. Your pot equity is your total share of the pot at any moment in time with cards to come. It helps you to work out if your decisions are sound or not. Serious poker players use an excellent piece of software called PokerStove which allows you to calculate your equity and with it the quality of your poker decisions in certain situations.

You should always be thinking about equity when you enter into a pot because the growth of equity should be your long term strategic goal in poker. This also leads us onto bluffing and semi-bluffing and this is where fold equity comes into the equation. If your opponent shoves all in on the river then you have no fold equity as you either fold or call. But if your opponent bets the flop and you raise on a straight draw then you have fold equity as your opponent will fold a fair percentage of their range. But if you get called then you have equity in the pot because of your eight outs to the probable best hand.

So you must always think of equity when you play a pot or a hand whether it is fold equity or pot equity as well as hand ranges. Also you need to start thinking in EV as well and this is the expected value of your hand and your average win or loss if the hand were played out time after time. So you must be thinking about all these factors every time you play a poker hand and you need to get used to thinking about them every single day.
