Split between Champion and Mendenhell

Three days after Mendenhell posted controversial statements on Osama Bin Laden’s death, Champion retracted its contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers running back player. The move is seen to have a dual effect, one it dissociates Rashard Mendenhall from the sports apparel manufacturer and secondly the company can attract consumers with the marketing received.
The unknown association
According to CNBC sports reporter Darren Rovell, more than ninety percent of Mendenhell’s fans were unaware of his association with the apparel manufacturing company. On Friday, Rovell told NFL.com that the company has made its stand by disassociating itself from the controversy. In addition, the company is able to create more awareness among the population. He said that though Mendenhell speech cannot be pardoned it was surprising to see the speed with which Champion has ended the association with the running back player.
Mendenhell comments
On Monday, Rashard Mendenhell posted a tweet in response to the celebrations that swept the world after the announcement of the most wanted terrorist’s death. He tweeted stating that it was inhumane to celebrate an individual’s death. Mendenhell also stated on his tweet that it was incorrect to hate a person without even speaking a single word with him. He also wrote that only one side of the events that transpired on September 11, 2001 was known to the world. Mendenhell mentioned on his tweet that he finds it difficult to believe that a man single-handedly could plan to demolish an entire skyscraper. His tweet encourages individuals to think about what really happened on the fatal day.
Champion’s views
Even though Mendenhell apologized for his comments, Champion did not approve of his words and decided to end its association with the NFL player. According to the company’s spokesperson, Matt Hall, Champion is a strong supporter of the government’s efforts to eliminate terrorist activities. He told USA Today that because of his comments, Champion does not deem Mendenhell to be an appropriate representative of the company and its beliefs.
Rovell states that though Mendenhell’s comments were not apt, the company’s reaction was even more surprising. According to him, the company may have taken advantage of his comments to publicly end its association with the sportsman.
